Matching the Hatch: A Simple Approach to Fly Selection

Before tying anything on, spend two or three minutes watching the water. Look for insects on the surface, spider webs along the bank carrying trapped flies, and the rise form fish are making — a sipping rise usually means small flies, a splashy rise often means something bigger or more active is on the menu.

Size and silhouette matter more than exact species matching for most UK trout fishing. A fly roughly the right size and colour, presented well, will usually out-fish a perfectly tied imitation presented badly.

If fish are rising but ignoring your dry fly, try fishing an emerger or a nymph just under the surface film — many rises are actually to insects still hatching, not fully formed adults on top of the water.

Keep a small, well-organised box rather than a large disorganised one. Confidence in a handful of patterns you know how to fish well beats an overwhelming box you never quite get through.
