Method Feeder Fishing for Beginners

A method feeder combines groundbait and hookbait into one compact, aerodynamic parcel, which is a large part of why it's so effective — fish find your hookbait sitting in the middle of an attractive pile of feed the moment it lands.

Mould your groundbait around the feeder firmly enough to survive the cast, but not so hard it won't break down once it hits the bottom. A good test is squeezing a ball in your hand — it should hold together but crumble if dropped from a foot up.

Keep hook lengths short — four to six inches is typical — so your hookbait sits close to the pile of feed rather than drifting away from it. A hair-rigged piece of corn, a worm, or a piece of dumbell pellet all work well.

Cast to the same spot every time. Consistency matters more than distance with a method feeder — you're building a bed of feed in one area, and moving it around each cast works against you.
